My name is Debbie Hill. I’m a pediatrician. I’ve been in practice for 12 years. The greatest fulfillment I’ve had in my career has been using it as a platform to share Christ with patients and physicians in many countries through medical missions.
Before I went to medical school I had the desire to do medical missions but I didn’t know in what capacity. I attended medical school and did my Pediatric Residency at Loma Linda University Medical School. During my 3rd year of practice I took my first medical mission trip to Guatemala. I saw 800 patients in a simple school house. I continued taking many trips to Guatemala and working with local doctors. When I would return to my practice I knew that God was calling me to use my career to help the impoverished through medical missions.
As I continued to work with the doctors in Guatemala I was impressed by the lack of infrastructure in medical care. I had the opportunity to train physicians in Guatemala in telemedicine in an effort to improve the continuity of patient care and enable patients to have better access to specialists in the Children's Hospital in Guatemala City. It’s been a joy to see the expansion of the local Guatmalan doctor's ministries to the local poor.
I’ve worked with Mariners Church to coordinate bringing in medical teams to Honduras and outreach to Aids victims in South Africa and Malawi. After the Tsunami I worked with both Mariners Church and Saddleback Church to send out joint medical teams to India and Indonesia. I'm currently working with MAP International on projects to partner with local churches to bring medical and spiritual care to those suffering from Aids in Africa.
I’ve had the opportunity to partner with Dr. Vance and Dr. Carol Garder on a project called World Health Education. Through this project lectures in medical education are made available to doctors abroad. Physicians in Latin America, Africa, China and Iraq view the medical lectures at worldheatlhed.org It’s been such a joy to see so many come to know Christ as we reached out to address their physical needs in the love of Christ.
Thunder Mission is a 501(c)(3) founded by David Kennedy-Cooley when he was 16 years old. David started off his life with an adoptive family in Mexico for 4 years. After that adoption failed, he then went to a series of 6 orphanages, suffering tremendous abuse at two of them. Sergio Palafox, the director of Casa de la Nueva Vida, found David locked in a room, under a staircase, drugged and near dead, at age 11. He'd been in that room for a year. He brought David, literally back to life. At age 13 David met Diave Kennedy Cooley and Richard Cooley, who would later become his parents. In David's new life in the US, he forgot for awhile where he came from. He went back to visit the Casa de la Nueva Vida, still run by Sergio Palafox and meet the kids. What could he do to help?, he asked Sergio.
Sergio said they had groups that gave them money and that did projects, but what the kids needed was someone to play with. With that David began speaking to high school groups in the US about his life and enlisting teenagers to come down with him to Juarez, Mexico. They spend 3 days at Casa de la Nueva Vida, do one project with the kids (plant trees, paint a school, and the like), cook dinner together, dance, sing and play. The teenagers get a new perspective on what life in other countries can be like and a newfound appreciation for what they have, to the delight of their parents. And the kids have met a big brother or sister from the US that they will always remember.
Each trip costs $2,000 for buses, food and supplies for a project for the kids while they are in Mexico. We're looking for sponsors for the trips. To get involved, or to have David come speak to your group, please contact David at 602.214.9226 or Thunder@TaxLoopholes.com
